The discovery of an unseen body of work by an unknown photographer—one who made no plans for (and may even have forgotten about) their oeuvre—is bound to feel like both a great gift and a heavy responsibility. Whatever John Baer’s intentions might have been, Andrew Baer and Megan Moynihan decided to share his work with the world, establishing the John Baer Archive in 2023 and producing, in the form of this elegant book (beautifully printed by the Veronese firm Editoriale Bortolazzi Stei), what they call a “memoir in photographs”
