“So many American soldiers wanted souvenirs, cigars and booze, Nazi flags and Lugers,” writes essayist Alexa Dilworth. He would come home with a camera instead, taken from a captured German soldier. “That John Baer claimed a Leica as a means of interacting with others and the world… is significant.” The camera, a Model III made in 1938, would never leave his side.
