Discovery – Preservation – Revelation – Review of “John Baer – The Extraordinary Ordinary: A Memoir in Photographs, 1945-1954”

By W. Scott Olsen, October 8, 2026

What emerged…from the boxes…was a story, a memoir of John’s life as well as a history of post-WWII New York and Europe, told in extraordinary black and white images—street photography and portraits with a dedication to the quotidian… The images are not portraits of an individual… as much as portraits of people in a place. The idea of milieu is essential here.

John Baer – The Extraordinary Ordinary: A Memoir in Photographs, 1945-1954…reads like a poignant explication of respect for the small moment which speaks to the integrity of humanity.
